FAQ

What is Cartomancy Club?

Cartomancy Club is a small, informal tarot study group that meets in person on a monthly basis at Silk in Brighton.

What happens at Cartomancy Club?

Each session has a theme, a book of the month, and sometimes a guest tarot expert (announced in advance where applicable). After a little intro and getting to know each other, we do tarot spreads, talk about them together, and chat about other tarot titbits that come up during the session. There’s also dedicated time at the end of the session for hanging out, doing draws for each other, and general tarot talk with your new study buddies – we look forward to learning with you!

What should I bring to Cartomancy Club?

Bring a tarot deck (or a digital alternative), something to make notes with (a notebook and pen/pencil, laptop, tablet, or your phone), and you’re welcome to bring non-alcoholic drinks and snacks!

Are you still taking COVID precautions?

We continue to take COVID-19 precautions to protect our immunocompromised attendees, and as such you will need to provide evidence of a negative lateral flow test within 24 hours of attending any Cartomancy Club event or arrive early to take one beforehand if you don’t have access to a lateral flow test yourself. Failure to present a negative lateral flow test means you will not be able to attend the club session and your ticket will not be refunded. Please make sure to check out our full COVID policy before attending.

DO YOU HAVE A CODE OF CONDUCT?

Yes, and you will need to read and agree to it in order to attend our events. You can find it in full on our events page.

Is Cartomancy Club a tarot class?

Not exactly – think of it more as a study group with other curious people! There’s no teacher but there will be a facilitator leading the club session so there’s a bit of direction. We aim to help people explore their intuition and sense of self-reflection using the tarot as well as giving attendees the chance to share their personal interpretations and knowledge with others. However, we’ll still talk about the basics as a touchpoint, and we hope everyone will learn a little something each session!

I’m new to tarot – is that okay?

Of course! Everyone of all experience levels is welcome at Cartomancy Club.

Is tarot a spiritual thing?

For some people – but while for some tarot can be part of a wider spiritual practice, for others it is a secular tool for mindfulness, creativity, and self exploration. Tarot scholars include people from all religious backgrounds and none, and no one here will judge you if your perception of tarot differs from theirs – there is no “right” way to do tarot.

I don’t have my own tarot deck – will I need one?

While having a physical tarot deck with you is helpful (we recommend ordering one from your favourite indie bookseller!), if you don’t want to commit to buying a deck yet you could try a phone app like Labyrinthos. You might also get a chance to try someone else’s deck if you ask nicely, but please only do so with permission!

What’s a good tarot deck to start out with?

The Rider Waite Smith deck is one of the most well-known tarot decks. First published in 1909, many modern decks take inspiration from this one, and the cards have plenty of classic mystical imagery to chew on. However, it’s far better to pick a deck you think is cool and vibe with than to get this one just because it’s the original!

Anything else to bear in mind?

You must be 18 years or older to attend Cartomancy Club. Tarot is a form of self-reflective guidance, and should not be used to make important decisions about medical, legal, or financial matters, or anything else of equal severity – please seek professional advice in these instances!
